Sales Qualified Opportunity (SQO)

An SQO is a deal that a sales rep has personally vetted and confirmed has budget, decision-making authority, and a real timeline, distinct from a lead that simply matched some qualifying criteria.

What it actually means

An SQO is not a form fill and it is not a good conversation. It is a rep looking at a prospect and saying: this account has money set aside, I know who signs, and there is a reason they need to solve this in a specific window. That's the standard. If any of those three things is missing, you have a conversation, not an opportunity.

Why it matters for anyone selling B2B

Pipeline reviews get inflated by counting things that feel like progress but aren't. A rep with 40 SQLs and 3 SQOs is not ahead, they're behind, and the gap tells you where the process is breaking. Comp plans, forecasting, and hiring decisions all get built on this number, so sloppy SQO criteria doesn't just distort a dashboard, it distorts headcount and quota math three quarters out.

The misconception

Most teams use SQL and SQO interchangeably, and most CRMs make it easy to do that by treating "opportunity created" as a single stage. But an SQL is marketing's judgment call: this person or account fits our ICP and showed enough intent to hand to sales. An SQO is sales' judgment call, made after direct contact, that the deal is real and worth building a proposal around. An SQL can become an SQO in one call or never become one at all. Confusing the two lets marketing take credit for pipeline that sales never actually validated, and it lets sales blame marketing for "bad leads" that were never meant to be opportunities in the first place.

How it should be measured

If you're running LinkedIn content, or any top of funnel motion, resist the urge to report on leads or even SQLs as your headline number. Volume there is easy to generate and easy to fake with the wrong targeting. SQO creation is the number that survives contact with a real buyer. Track content and outbound performance against SQOs created and SQO to closed-won rate, not against form fills or connection requests accepted. A campaign that produces 200 leads and zero SQOs did not work, no matter what the engagement metrics said. A campaign that produces 12 leads and 4 SQOs is the one to fund again.
