Product Qualified Lead (PQL)
A PQL is a prospect who has shown buying intent through actual usage of your product, like activating a key feature or hitting a usage threshold in a trial, rather than through form fills, downloads, or content engagement.
What a PQL actually is
A PQL is qualified by behavior inside the product, not behavior around it. Someone filling out a form to download a whitepaper is a marketing qualified lead. Someone who signs up for a free trial and invites three teammates before day five is a PQL. The signal is usage, not interest.
This matters because usage is harder to fake than intent. A form fill costs nothing. Inviting teammates, connecting an integration, or running a feature five times in a week means someone is actually trying to get value out of your product, on their own time, without a rep in the room.
Why it matters to B2B sellers
PQLs let sales skip the discovery-call theater. If someone has already used the feature that solves their problem, you don't need to ask what keeps them up at night. You already know. That changes the first call from a qualifying conversation into an expansion or close conversation.
It also changes timing. A rep working from a PQL list is reaching out at the exact moment someone is getting value, which is the moment they're most open to paying for more of it.
The misconception
The common assumption is that PQLs are a product-led growth concept and irrelevant if you sell top-down, enterprise, sales-led deals with no self-serve trial. That's outdated. Sales-led B2B teams increasingly combine in-product usage data with off-product signals, particularly LinkedIn activity, to build a fuller qualification picture. A prospect who's active in a trial and also engaging with your company's LinkedIn content or your reps' posts is showing intent from two directions at once, and that combination is a stronger signal than either alone.
How it's really measured and used
PQL scoring usually tracks specific in-product events: feature activation, seat additions, usage frequency, integration setup. Teams then layer on external signals. Factors.ai, for example, uses LinkedIn retargeting aimed specifically at warm product users who haven't converted, serving ads that reinforce value they've already experienced rather than running cold awareness campaigns. That's the PQL model applied outside the product itself: usage data deciding who gets targeted, and where.
