Open Profile

Open Profile is a LinkedIn setting that lets any member send you a message for free, without spending an InMail credit or needing a prior connection. It only affects messages coming to you, not messages you send to others.

What it actually means

Open Profile is a toggle in LinkedIn's privacy settings. Turn it on and your profile tells the rest of LinkedIn: anyone can message me directly, no connection required, no InMail credit spent. It removes the usual gate that makes cold outreach expensive or impossible.

The setting is one-directional. If you enable Open Profile, people can message you for free. It does nothing for messages you send to other people. If you want to message someone without spending a credit or connection request, they need Open Profile turned on, not you.

Why it matters for B2B sellers

Decision-makers are hard to reach because LinkedIn's default state requires a connection or a paid InMail to get a message in front of them. Open Profile removes that friction, but only on the receiving end. A prospect with Open Profile enabled has effectively told the market: skip the gatekeeping, just talk to me.

That makes Open Profile a useful signal to look for when you're prospecting. Someone who has opened themselves up to unsolicited messages is often more reachable and, in some cases, more open to conversations from vendors, recruiters, or partners than someone who hasn't. It's also a lever worth pulling yourself if inbound interest matters more to your role than controlling who reaches you. Founders, consultants, and anyone doing content-driven growth often benefit from lowering that barrier so warm inbound doesn't stall on a connection request.

The misconception

The confusion, and it's common, is that Open Profile messages still cost an InMail credit or that you need to already be connected to use it. Neither is true. The entire point of the setting is to bypass both of those requirements. If someone has Open Profile on, you can message them cold, for free, with no connection needed. People also assume enabling it on their own account will let them message others for free. It won't. It only opens their own inbox, not their outbox.

How it's used

Sales teams checking prospect profiles before deciding whether to spend an InMail credit will look for the Open Profile badge first. If it's there, save the credit and just send the message. On the inbound side, some sellers treat turning Open Profile on as a small growth lever alongside posting consistently: content builds awareness, Open Profile removes the last click of friction between someone wanting to talk to you and actually doing it.
