Net New Pipeline
Net new pipeline is the dollar value of opportunities created with accounts that had no prior sales relationship or open deal, as opposed to expansion, upsell, or renewal revenue from existing customers.
What it actually means
Net new pipeline counts only opportunities sourced from accounts your company was not already selling to or actively working. If a prospect fills out a form, books a call, or gets added to a sequence and they've never been a customer or an open deal before, that's net new. If they're already in your CRM as a customer or a live opportunity, whatever revenue comes from them belongs somewhere else: expansion, cross-sell, renewal.
Why it matters for anyone selling on content
When you're running LinkedIn content, cold outreach, or any top-of-funnel motion, net new pipeline is the number that proves the motion is actually finding new market, not just circling back to people who already know you. A rep or a content program can look great on a "total pipeline generated" slide while every dollar of it came from accounts that were going to buy anyway. Net new is the honest version of that slide.
The misconception
The common mistake is reporting a single pipeline number that blends everything together. A content program posts about a product launch, an existing customer expands their contract after seeing the post, and that expansion gets counted as "content-attributed pipeline" right alongside a genuinely cold account that booked a demo for the first time. Both are real outcomes. Neither is the same kind of outcome. Expansion pipeline tells you your content keeps customers engaged. Net new pipeline tells you your content brings in accounts you didn't have before. Collapsing the two into one figure lets a program that's actually failing at new logo acquisition look healthy because renewals happened to land in the same quarter.
How it's measured in practice
Measuring it cleanly requires tagging opportunities at creation with account status: new logo, existing customer, or open deal already in motion. Only the new logo bucket counts toward net new pipeline. Marketing and content teams should ask for this split before claiming credit for pipeline numbers, and sales leaders should ask for it before believing them. If a report can't tell you what share of "pipeline generated" is net new versus expansion, treat the number as decoration, not evidence.
