Native Video

Native video is footage uploaded directly into LinkedIn's own player, rather than posted as a link to YouTube, Vimeo, or another host. The distinction is about where the file lives, not what the content is about.

What it actually means

When you drag an MP4 into the LinkedIn post composer and it plays inline with autoplay, that's native video. When you paste a YouTube link and LinkedIn generates a thumbnail card that opens another tab, that's not native, no matter how good the video is.

The file has to live on LinkedIn's servers and play inside LinkedIn's player for it to count. Same goes for LinkedIn Live and Video Newsletters: both are native formats, just different delivery mechanics within the platform's own ecosystem.

Why it matters if you sell

LinkedIn's algorithm treats native uploads and external links differently, and not subtly. Native videos uploaded directly to LinkedIn receive up to 5 times more engagement than external video links, according to Famelab, and they appear more prominently in feeds because of autoplay. That's not a small edge. If you're posting a demo, a client win, or a talking-head clip to build pipeline, uploading it natively instead of dropping a YouTube link is one of the highest-leverage, zero-cost decisions you can make on the platform.

Stackmatix frames native in-feed video as the workhorse for organic storytelling and brand building, distinct from LinkedIn Live (better for unpolished, real-time connection like AMAs and demos) and Video Newsletters (built for a serialized, subscribed audience over time). Each format serves a different stage of trust-building, but all three share the native upload requirement.

The misconception

Salespeople often think "native video" just means "video content," as opposed to text or images. That's wrong. You can post a beautifully shot, perfectly scripted video and still get suppressed reach if you linked it from an external host. The algorithm doesn't reward video as a format, it rewards the hosting method. A native talking-head clip shot on a phone will often outperform a polished external link, purely because of where the file sits.

How it's measured

There's no separate "native video" metric in LinkedIn analytics. You measure it the same way you measure any post: views, watch time, engagement rate. The difference shows up in the results, not in a special dashboard. If you want to test the effect yourself, post the same message once as a native upload and once as an external link and compare reach after 48 hours.
