LinkedIn Top Voice

A badge LinkedIn awards for consistent participation in Collaborative Articles and general platform engagement, not a certification of sales skill or industry expertise.

What it actually is

The Top Voice badge is LinkedIn's official recognition label, the small blue or gold tag under someone's name. It replaced the old LinkedIn Influencer program, which got renamed Top Voices in October 2022. The mechanics behind it lean heavily on Collaborative Articles: LinkedIn's AI-generated prompts that people answer to build up contributions, plus general activity like posting frequency, comments, and reactions.

None of that is a test of whether someone can close a deal, run a discovery call, or actually knows the market they claim to serve.

Why it matters if you sell

Buyers see the badge and often assume it means something adjacent to authority: "this person must know their stuff." Sellers see it on their own profile or a competitor's and start treating it as a credibility asset worth featuring in outreach or bios. Neither move is wrong exactly, but both are built on a shaky premise. A badge tells you someone shows up on LinkedIn a lot. It does not tell you they understand your buyer's problem, have relevant war stories, or can be trusted with a six-figure decision.

If you're evaluating a piece of content, a potential partner, or even your own positioning, conflating "Top Voice" with "expert" is a category error.

The misconception

The common assumption is that Top Voice signals buyer-relevant credibility, the same way a certification or a case study might. It doesn't. It signals platform participation. Someone can earn it by answering Collaborative Article prompts consistently and never having sold anything to anyone. As one LinkedIn post on the topic put it, people are right to say "the badge doesn't mean anything" in a literal sense, but it still functions as a psychological shortcut: LinkedIn picked this person, so they must be worth listening to. That perception is real and it affects trust, even when the underlying signal is thin.

How it's really measured

At its core, Top Voice status tracks engagement volume and Collaborative Article activity, not outcomes, not client results, not domain depth. Treat it the way you'd treat a follower count: a proxy for visibility, not a proxy for whether someone can help you sell or buy better. If you want to know if someone actually knows the space, read what they wrote, not the label next to their name.
