LinkedIn Audience Network (LAN)
LinkedIn Audience Network (LAN) is an ad delivery extension that pushes sponsored content off LinkedIn and onto third-party apps and websites in LinkedIn's partner network, similar to how the Google Display Network or Meta Audience Network work.
What it is
LAN is a checkbox on LinkedIn Campaign Manager, not a separate product. When you enable it on a sponsored content campaign, LinkedIn doesn't just serve your ad in-feed to members browsing LinkedIn. It also places that same ad on a network of third-party sites and mobile apps that have partnered with LinkedIn to carry its inventory. The targeting logic (job title, company size, seniority, whatever you built the campaign on) still applies. The ad just shows up somewhere else.
Why it matters if you sell B2B
Most people who set up a LinkedIn ad campaign never look at the toggle. It's often on by default in certain campaign objectives, which means a chunk of your "LinkedIn" impressions and clicks aren't happening on LinkedIn at all. That has real consequences for how you read performance.
If your CTR looks worse than expected, LAN placements are frequently the reason. Off-platform inventory tends to convert attention differently than an in-feed post that shows up next to someone's actual professional content. Clicks from a random app or website don't carry the same intent as a click from someone scrolling their LinkedIn feed at 9am on a Tuesday.
If you're running brand awareness or reach campaigns, LAN can be useful: it's cheap volume and it extends frequency. If you're running anything where you care about lead quality or where the click itself needs to land in a credible context (a demo request, a content download tied to your LinkedIn presence), you want to know whether LAN is inflating your numbers with traffic that never touched LinkedIn's feed.
The misconception
The common mistake is assuming that "LinkedIn ad impressions" and "LinkedIn ad clicks" mean impressions and clicks on LinkedIn. They don't automatically. Unless you've checked your campaign settings, some meaningful percentage of your reported reach could be from LAN placements on unrelated apps and sites. Teams comparing CTR across campaigns, or benchmarking against industry numbers, are often comparing apples to oranges because one campaign has LAN on and another doesn't.
How it's actually measured
Campaign Manager lets you segment performance by placement. If you're serious about knowing what's working, pull the breakdown between LinkedIn-only delivery and LAN delivery before you draw conclusions about ad copy, creative, or targeting. Turning LAN off entirely is a legitimate choice if your goal is precision over reach.
