InMail
InMail is LinkedIn's paid messaging feature, available to Premium and Sales Navigator accounts, that lets you message people outside your network without a connection request. It is not email and it does not behave like email.
What it actually is
InMail is a LinkedIn-native message that bypasses the connection requirement. Normally you can only message 1st-degree connections for free. InMail lets Premium and Sales Navigator holders reach 2nd and 3rd-degree contacts directly, which is the entire point of the feature for sales teams: it turns cold prospects into reachable inboxes without a pending invite sitting unanswered.
That access comes at a cost, literally. InMail credits are metered and tied to your subscription tier, so every send has a price attached even if the recipient never replies.
Why it matters for B2B sellers
InMail is often the first real estate you get with a prospect who has never heard of you. There's no relationship equity, no mutual connection doing the introduction, no prior comment thread. The message has to earn a response entirely on its own merit: subject line, relevance, timing. Sales Navigator's targeting filters (industry, seniority, company size, recent job changes) exist specifically to make sure the credits you spend land on people who plausibly have a reason to care.
The misconception
The common failure mode is treating InMail like an email blast: write one template, send it to five hundred people, expect a percentage to convert. That mindset assumes response rate scales with volume. It doesn't. InMail response rates scale with relevance, timing, and whatever warm signal already exists before the message lands, a shared post, a recent trigger event, a mutual connection, engagement with the person's content.
Send generic pitches at scale and you'll get a low reply rate and a wasted credit, because the recipient has zero reason to distinguish you from the other unsolicited pitches sitting in their inbox. Send a smaller number of messages that reference something specific and true about the person or their company, and the reply rate changes shape entirely.
How it's really used
Treat each InMail credit like a paid ad impression, not a free email send. Before you spend one, ask what signal you're working with: did they change jobs, post something relevant, view your profile, get referred. The credit is the access. The signal is what makes the access worth anything.
