Dark Funnel
The dark funnel is all the buyer research, peer conversation, and internal debate that shapes a purchase decision before anyone fills out a form or shows up in your CRM. It's not a channel, it's everything you can't see.
What it actually means
By the time a buyer books a call or fills out a form, most of the decision is already made. They've read reviews, asked a peer in a Slack group, watched a demo video someone shared internally, checked LinkedIn for who's using your product, and had at least one conversation you'll never see a record of. None of that shows up in your attribution reports. That whole zone is the dark funnel.
It's called "dark" for the same reason astronomers talk about dark matter: you know it's there because of its effects, not because you can observe it directly. A deal shows up already warm. A prospect knows your pricing before you've quoted it. Someone mentions a competitor feature you never announced. That's the dark funnel leaving fingerprints.
Why it matters if you sell for a living
If you're selling B2B, especially anything with a buying committee, most of your pipeline was influenced by activity your marketing team can't put a UTM tag on. Sales reps who treat every lead as a blank slate are ignoring the fact that the prospect has already formed opinions, probably about your category, your competitors, and sometimes about you specifically. Discovery calls that ignore this waste the first ten minutes re-explaining things the buyer already knows.
The practical move is to ask better questions early: what have you already looked at, who else is involved, what's the internal conversation been so far. You're not filling a knowledge gap, you're surfacing one that already exists.
The misconception
People conflate dark funnel with dark social, meaning shares in DMs, private Slack channels, and group chats that don't carry referrer data. Dark social is a subset. It's one visible-adjacent piece of a much bigger invisible whole. The dark funnel also includes things that never touch a screen: a colleague's recommendation over coffee, an internal debate in a meeting you weren't in, a memory of a conference booth from eight months ago. Dark social is trackable in theory if you had the right tooling. Most of the dark funnel isn't trackable even in theory.
How it's actually used
You don't measure the dark funnel directly. You infer it: through intent data, through buyers showing up unusually informed, through deals that move fast because the groundwork was already done elsewhere. The honest response isn't a new tracking tool, it's building content and outreach that assumes the buyer already knows something, and a sales process that asks what that something is instead of pretending it doesn't exist.
