Cold Calling

Cold calling is outbound sales development where a rep calls a business prospect who has shown no prior buying intent or engagement, with the goal of starting a conversation and booking a next step like a discovery call.

What it actually means

Cold calling is calling someone who hasn't raised their hand. They don't know your company, aren't expecting your call, and may never have talked to anyone on your team before (leadforensics.com). That's the whole definition. It has nothing to do with whether the call is scripted, whether it's your first touch, or whether you found the number on LinkedIn five minutes ago. The word "cold" describes the prospect's intent level, not your method.

In practice it's run by SDRs, BDRs, or account executives working a target list, and the job is narrow: get a conversation, get a next step, usually a discovery meeting or demo (saleshive.com). It's not a closing motion. It's a door-opener.

Why it matters to someone selling B2B

Pipeline doesn't build itself from inbound alone, especially in categories where the buyer isn't actively searching yet. Cold calling remains one of the few tactics that lets you choose exactly who you talk to and when, instead of waiting for intent signals to surface on their own. If your quota depends on new logos in accounts that aren't already engaging with your content, someone on your team is picking up the phone.

The misconception

The story that LinkedIn social selling killed cold calling is wrong, and it's a comfortable story for reps who don't like dialing. What actually changed is the setup, not the activity. Reps who build pipeline efficiently use LinkedIn to identify who's worth calling: job changes, posts, engagement, hiring signals. Then they call. The signal shortens the call and improves the open, it doesn't replace the need to talk to a human on the phone. Teams that dropped calling entirely in favor of social touches alone tend to see slower cycles, not faster ones, because a comment or a DM rarely forces a decision the way a live conversation does.

How it's really used

Good cold calling today is signal-informed, not blind. Reps prioritize call lists using triggers pulled from LinkedIn and other sources, then measure the call by connect rate, conversation-to-meeting rate, and meetings held, not dials logged. The phone is still the fastest way to convert a warm signal into a booked meeting. LinkedIn just tells you who to call first.
