Boolean Search

Boolean search is a query technique that combines the operators AND, OR, and NOT with quotation marks and parentheses inside a LinkedIn keyword field to narrow results to a precise buyer persona instead of a loose pile of keyword matches.

What it actually means

LinkedIn Sales Navigator supports five Boolean tools inside its keyword and title fields: AND, OR, NOT, quotation marks for exact phrases, and parentheses for grouping (salesrobot.co). Typed correctly, a string like ("VP Sales" OR "Head of Sales") AND (SaaS OR software) NOT recruiter tells the search engine exactly which combinations of words must appear together, which are interchangeable, and which should disqualify a profile entirely.

This is different from typing a plain phrase into the search bar and hoping. A bare keyword search treats your terms as loosely related suggestions. Boolean search treats them as logic.

Why it matters for B2B sellers

Most list-building failures in Sales Navigator aren't a data problem, they're a query problem. A seller searching just "revenue operations" gets people who mention it once in a summary, job seekers who used to hold the title, consultants who write about it, and the actual RevOps leaders all mixed together. Boolean search is how you separate the buyer from the noise before you ever open a profile.

At scale this compounds. A rep sending 50 connection requests a week off a sloppy keyword search is burning outreach volume on people who were never going to buy. The same 50 sends against a tight Boolean string convert differently because the list itself is already qualified.

The misconception

The common mistake is treating Sales Navigator's keyword field like a Google search box: typing a full sentence or a string of unstructured terms and trusting the algorithm to figure out intent. It won't. Without quotes, "Head of Sales" gets read as three separate words that can appear anywhere on the profile, not as a title. Without NOT, every recruiter, career coach, and podcast host who ever said your target keyword shows up alongside your real prospects. Sellers who never learn the operators assume the tool's targeting is weak, when the real issue is that they've been running keyword search, not Boolean search.

How it's used in practice

Effective Boolean strings are built and reused like assets, not typed fresh each time. Sellers who prospect seriously keep a running library of proven strings per persona (title variants OR'd together, industry terms AND'd in, disqualifiers NOT'd out) and refine them as they see which combinations return clean lists versus noisy ones (overloop.com).
